Cucumbers are very easy to grow and don’t require very much care at all. They love warm weather and water.
Once the flowers turn into small cucumbers, they grow very quickly, especially after a good rain. It is important to check them daily once they have formed so you can pick them when they are just right.
Some varieties grow on a vine and others as a bush. I have only grown pickling cucumbers on a vine.
Using a trellis or fence is the easiest way to keep the cucumbers clean and off of the ground. It can also deter bugs.
Below is a picture of the young vine.
Fencing is a great way to provide them with plenty of climbing area that can hold the weight of the cucumbers. Plastic coated fencing works well. It only takes minimal training to get them to climb the fence since they naturally want to climb.
Soil – Cucumbers like rich, composted soil that is kept moist.
Water – They like moist soil and love water. Water often enough to keep the soil moist at all times.
Sun – They like full sun and warmth.
Mulch – This works well for cucumbers because it helps keep the soil moist.
Planting – Cucumbers are very susceptible to damage from frost. Don’t plant the seedlings until all danger of frost is gone and the soil is consistently 70 degrees F.
Containers – They are great for growing in containers.
All that is left is to enjoy the refreshing taste of the cucumbers!
