Herbal eye pillows are very easy to make. They are nice to have around if you suffer from headaches, sinus allergies or have trouble sleeping. They can also be used for relaxation. There is no need to spend a lot of money. All you need are the following items:
1) Material – I used cotton for mine but you can use anything you like. Silk and satin are nice choices as well.
2) Flax seed – You’ll need approximately 1 cup. I buy mine from Aldi’s for $2.19 a bag. One bag will make several eye pillows.
3) Piece of paper & pen
5) Needle and thread
6) Dried herbs – you will need about ½ cup of dried herbs
Take a regular sized piece of copy or notebook paper and draw the shape of the eye pillow you want to make. It’s really up to you. You can make a rectangle or a variation like I did below. Make it a little larger than you want to allow for sewing. Cut it out to use as a template.
Fold your material in half with the print on the inside. Once you sew it together, you will turn it inside out.
Trace your hand drawn shape onto the material. Cut the material and sew it together leaving a large enough space to fill it with the flax seed and herbs.
Pour enough flax seed to fill half of the pillow into a bowl. Mix it together with dried herbs. I grow and dry my own herbs. For this I used dried lavender and dried rose petals. I love to dry rose petals, they smell amazing when dried and it’s one of my favorite scents. You can, of course, use any scent you like, Lavender is most popular for eye pillows.
Turn your material inside out so the print shows on the outside. Fill halfway with your flaxseed mixture. Sew the last part together. It’s that easy!
I use flaxseed because I like the soft texture and weight of it. You don’t have to use it. You can just fill the material with dried herbs if you like. I don’t recommend using essential oils because you are going to be laying it over your eyes. Remember, DO NOT heat it up to use on your eyes. Use it the way it is or chilled a little in the refrigerator. Enjoy!
